The 68040 Productivity Solution: The MicroMac 68040 Q650 Logic Board Trade-up is MicroMac's solution to upgrading 68030-based Mac IIvx, Mac IIvi and Performa 600 Macs with the ability to run the latest application, multimedia and Mac OS software. Featuring either a fast 50/25MHz or 66/33MHz 68040 processor, the MicroMac 68040 Q650 Logic Board trade-up delivers dynamic speed and microprocessor technology. The trade-up provides such features as:

• 50/25MHz or 66/33MHz 68040 processor with or without FPU
• 32-bit data bus
• Base RAM of 4MB expandable to configurations of, for example 5, 6, 8, 12, 20, 36, 76, 100 and 132 MB
• VRAM configurations of 512KB (8-bit or 256 colors) or 1MB (16-bit or thousands of colors)
• Integrated Level-1 Cache
• PMMU (Paged Memory Management Unit) built into 68040
  (PMMU is required to run Virtual Memory or RAM Doubler)
• Three 96-pin NuBus slots for third party NuBus cards

The video circuitry of the Quadra 650 logic board, just like the Mac IIvx, or IIvi or Performa 600 has a 32-bit wide data path. Therefore the VRAM expansion requires two VRAM SIMMs of identical size. MicroMac can provide 256KB VRAMs to display thousands of colors.

Technical Hint: You can identify the amount of VRAM of your current 68030-based Mac by the following procedure: Open the Monitors Control Panel Check the possible (selectable) color depth choices. If the maximum color depth is 256 colors, you do not have any VRAM SIMMs installed in your 68030-based Macintosh. If the maximum color depth is Thousands of colors, you do have two 256KB VRAM SIMMs installed in your 68030-based Macintosh.

System and Tool Requirements: an optional anti-static grounding strap (available at most computer hardware stores).

Upgrade Installation: Prior to installing the MicroMac 68040 Q650 Logic Board Trade-up you will need to update or reinstall the System 7.1 or Mac OS 7.5 - 8.1 software so that it is compatible with the Q650. This is a simple procedure that is outlined in the documentation that comes with the Q650 upgrade. Once you have installed the correct System software, the installation involves removing the current 68030 logic board from your computer (which easily unsnaps from the inner case) and installing the Q650 logic board.
