30-pin Memory SIMM

The 30-pin 8-bit SIMM is the standard memory SIMM for the early Macintosh models.

These SIMMs come in 1MB, 4MB or 16MB sizes.

Depending on the Mac model they are installed in pairs or in sets of four to achieve a 16-bit or 32-bit data path, respectively.

Memory is like Money: If you have owned a computer for a number of years, you know it is a true statement: you always can use more memory. With today's powerful system software and the newer generation application programs you need more memory, lots of it in fact, to run your computer efficiently.
Whereas a Mac with 4MB and System 7.0 allows you to comfortably run one or two smaller applications, you need 10MB or 20MB or even more to run System 7.5.3, a couple of standard applications, and a memory-hungry web browser, like Netscape.

Why can't I just get a single SIMM?: The earliest Macintosh models, as well as the low-cost Macintosh LC family and most Performa models have a 16-bit wide data path to the memory. These models require that the memory SIMMs are upgraded in pairs of two 8-bit SIMMs.

For best performance, the later 030-based Macintosh models, as well as all Quadra family models have a 32-bit wide data path to the memory. These models require that the memory SIMMs are upgraded in sets of four 8-bit 30-pin SIMMs.
