Productivity Solution: The MicroMac LC550 Logic Board Trade-up is MicroMac's solution to upgrading slower 68030-based Mac with integrated display, such as the Color Classic series and Mac TV Macs with a faster logic board with extended memory capabilities. The LC550 logic board can easily be expanded to 36MB. The upgrade provides such features as:

  • 33MHz 68030 processor with or without FPU
  • 32-bit wide data bus
  • Base RAM of 4MB expandable to configurations of 5, 6, 8, 12, 20 or 36MB.
  • VRAM configurations of 512KB (8-bit, 256 colors) or 768KB (16-bit, thousands of colors)
  • PMMU (Paged Memory Management Unit) built into 68030
(PMMU is required to run Virtual Memory )
  • 114-pin LC style PDS slot for third party PDS cards (compatible with 96-pin LC-style PDS cards)
  • Built-in ports for printer, modem, SCSI, ADB, audio-out (stereo) and audio-in

RAM! RAM!! RAM!!! And More RAM: No longer are you limited to the 10MB limitation set by the Color Classic or the 8MB set by Mac TV. Give your applications room to breathe by adding up to 36MB of RAM onto the logic board. That's more than enough memory to run all your favorite applications, Internet software and utilities in a comfortable computing environment.

No More Grainy Dithered Color Images: The MicroMac LC550 Logic Board Trade-up provides you with the ability to run 16-bit color (thousands of colors) on the built-in monitor. You can view rich, pure photographic color images in such applications as Photoshop and Web browsers displaying JPEG images. With 16-bit color you can perform accurate color correction on photographs, scans and images which is impossible to do with limited 8-bit color.

The video circuitry of the LC550 Logic Board has 512KB base VRAM and can be expanded with one 256KB VRAM SIMM. MicroMac can provide a 256KB VRAM to display 16-bit color, or if your slower logic board already has expanded VRAM, you can transfer the VRAM SIMM to the new faster logic board.

Technical Hint:
You can identify the amount of VRAM of your current 68030-based Mac by the following procedure:

  • Open the Monitors Control Panel
  • Check the possible (selectable) color depth choices.
  • If the maximum color depth is 256 colors, you do not have a VRAM SIMM installed in your slower logic board.
  • If the maximum color depth is Thousands of colors, you do have a 256KB VRAM SIMM installed in your 68030-based Macintosh.

Upgrade Installation: Prior to installing the MicroMac LC 550 Logic Board Trade-up you will need to update or reinstall the System software so that it is compatible with LC 550 upgrade. Once you have the correct System software installed, the installation involves removing the current slower 68030 logic board from your computer and installing the faster LC 550 logic board.

Tool Requirements: A Phillips screw driver and optionally an antistatic grounding strap (available at most computer hardware stores).

System Software Requirements: Minimum System Software required is System 7.1 with Enabler 403 vers1.0.2 or Mac OS 7.5x, 7.6x.

Time Requirement: About one hour. 45 minutes is required for System Software installation. 15 minutes is required for the hardware exchange of the logic board.
